Ride With Simon Warren - Yorkshire Velo Tours | UK Cycling Tours, Rides, Routes and Group Events in Yorkshire

'Ride With Simon Warren'

£ P.O.Aper personShared twin/double

Outline

Ride the hills of Yorkshire with Simon Warren, the man who literally wrote the book on them! Simon will guide you through many of his favourites on a day out and your legs and lungs will never forget through some of the best scenery in Britain!

Simon has a number of routes you can choose from mainly in the Yorkshire Dales but also covering the North Yorkshire Moors. He can also devise a route to specifically meet your requirements. The ride will be supported by the Yorkshire Velo Tours team with many options set out below to make your day in the hills one to remember.

A little about Simon...

Simon Warren’s been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France.

A few weeks later he rode his first race, a 10 mile time trial on the A1 and by the end of the year was club hill climb champion. Although not having what it took to beat the best he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his life long fascination with steep roads.

Trips were planned and pilgrimages made to find ever steeper and longer slopes which culminated in the publication of his first book, 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs. Following its 2010 release Simon has now written 11 further guides to hills from Scotland to Italy together with appearing on numerous TV shows, hosting talks, guiding rides and spending hours and hours riding up hill.

"An unforgettable week of riding with a good balance of beautiful hilly rides in the dales and visits to must-see local attractions such as Fountains Abbey and Bolton Castle. We ate really well and drank hardy ale in many a charming town. A day in York at the end of our trip was also fantastic and we recommend the city as a final destination. Without fail, the accommodation that Charles booked for us was top-notch, very friendly, and offered a slice of Yorkshire hospitality"

"Professional, caring, well organised and very knowledgeable hosts who kept us all extremely safe in the poor conditions. The hotel and restaurant were very welcoming and great quality.
Memories I will never forget!"

Colin Kimmins, Lendlease UK

"I was looking for someone to help me host an event that offered a quality service with attention to detail. Charles and his team were able to meet this brief perfectly. Charles was able to help me work through options well and had good connections for catering locally. The full team interacted with our guests brilliantly and made them feel very welcome. Would recommend!"

Alex Stork, Business Development Manager, Overbury

Outline

Why not consider a cycling based day or half day for your business or organisation? We have partnered up with a number of venues around Yorkshire to offer a range of bespoke cycling days ranging from small team away days to mini sportive events.

A unique cycling experience or challenge can enhance lives, strengthen relationships and offer a true sense of adventure and shared achievement – all key ingredients for the perfect corporate hospitality or team building event.

Whether you are considering organising an unforgettable team building exercise or creating an event to entertain your clients, we can make sure it exactly fits your requirements

For literally the cost of a good dinner you can enjoy a day’s cycling in the Yorkshire Dales, what better way to treat your clients or team! Previous clients include: Lendlease UK, Overbury plc, Mentha Capital (Amsterdam), Banana Kick and RSM.

Why a cycling event?

Cycling has all the ingredients to provide you with the perfect social group activity.

Anyone can take part in a corporate cycling adventure whilst at the same time it promotes:

Healthy Living
We believe that a healthy lifestyle equals a healthy mind. A cycling event may well be the target to encourage your staff and clients to get that old bike out of the shed and hit the road. A few hours in the saddle doesn’t have to be difficult but it will be a challenge for some. Sharing such experiences and getting fit with colleagues will foster the common goal of a healthier, happy team.

Teamwork
Look at the achievements of Team SKY in recent years. Chris Froome always emphasises that teamwork is crucial to his success at the Tour de France. Cycling is the embodiment of team work and no finer way to get your team working hard together in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Adventure
For most people who book our rides, the routes take them somewhere they’ve never been before. Many people are overwhelmed with the scenery and views they experience, only a few miles from the cities of Leeds and Bradford. Let YVT take you on an adventure into the hidden gems of Yorkshire on a bike!

Fundraising
Create a shared challenge and achievement and use this as the focus of your company’s annual charitable work. A charity cycling event is an excellent way to engage and motivate your staff and raise awareness about your chosen charity both across your company and your clients.

Great PR
An excellent to get exposure across your client base and industry. Let your bespoke cycling event provide your staff and clients with a day to remember, perhaps by raising money for your chosen charity also by telling everyone about it!

Fun
Cycling is actually great fun both for those new to the activity to hardened athletes alike!

What do we offer?

We always meet with prospective clients to talk through and design an event that is right for your business.

As a guide, this is a typical cycling event:

You have the option to have Simon Warren, 100 Greatest Climbs fame, as your ride guide.

Itinerary

Day1

Arrival

Start and finish at a venue that fits your requirements, in the past we have used The Wheatley Arms in Ilkley, The Coniston Hotel near Skipton, the Sawley Arms and Harrogate Cricket Club.

A pre-ride breakfast in the conference room with options to use the audio visual facilities for company presentation / welcome.

Each rider will be given a drink and nutrition pack comprising a Yorkshire Velo Tours water bottle, energy gels, flapjack and a banana.

Day1

The Ride

We have a wide range of tried and tested routes and we will choose the most appropriate for your riders.

Often it works best to have two options: a shorter less strenuous route for those newer to cycling and a more challenging route for the regular cyclists.

Each group of riders will be led by an experienced local ride leader. Our team mechanic will also drive a support vehicle to accompany the riders, so it will feel a bit like riding in a team on the Tour de France! There will be regular stops and water and food will be available to sustain the riders on route. If anyone is really struggling with the ride, there is space for people and bikes in the support vehicle, so they can always hop onboard.

What's Included?

Bikes/Technical

Before the ride our Cytech qualified team mechanic will perform a bike check for each rider and provide any technical advice as required If riders don’t have their own bikes, bike hire is available.

The Cafe Stop

No cycle ride in the Yorkshire Dales would be complete without a great cafe stop to enjoy homemade food and drink. We have several tried and tested cafes to stop at, which we book ahead ready for our arrival.

Finish

Return to round the day off with drinks and food

Photography
You will receive an online album of photographs of your cycling event taken by our professional photographer

Outline

We’ve had many guests in the past who want an introduction to Yorkshire Dales cycling out from one location each day, usually for a 2 or 3 day stay. This is an ideal format whether you want a few hard days’ cycling or something more leisurely

The tour features 3 rides that showcase the incredible variety of roads and scenery in Yorkshire. Heading in a different direction each day, you will ride sections of the Tour de France routes and the Tour de Yorkshire as well as more undiscovered roads that both inspire and challenge.

Daily mileage will be around 25 - 50 miles, but there is flexibility and the rides can be shortened or lengthened based on the consensus of the riders.

Accommodation is based in the lovely town of Ilkley, a location which is simply a gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. When the Tour de Yorkshire cycled through the town in 2015, the TV commentators described Ilkley as the ‘capital of cycling in Yorkshire’. The town boasts the largest cycling club in the country where almost 10% of the population are members!

Itinerary

Day1

Arrival

Arrive in Ilkley afternoon / evening at the Wheatley Arms. Introduction to the tour in the evening and briefing on the next day’s ride.

Day2

Ride 1.
27-32 miles

Wharfe Valley - Bolton Abbey - Burnsall, possibly Grassington

The route takes you along the quiet ‘back road’ out of Ilkley up the Wharfe Valley to the historic Bolton Abbey and a chance to see the ruined Priory and the Church. We’ll stop for a coffee by the river and ensure everyone is happy with the riding arrangements. From here, the route heads further up the valley to Burnsall, where many scenes from the film Calendar Girls were filmed. The lunch cafe stop will be around the half way point in the ride after which we return to Ilkley on the opposite side of the river through Appletreewick with views over to Simon’s Seat.

Day3

Ride 2.
30-45 miles

Asquith - Otley - Leathley - Almscliff Crag - Washburn Valley

This route is slightly longer than day 1 with some hills, but nothing too long or steep. Initially travelling down the Wharfe Valley, we soon head northwards through series of delightful villages heading to the morning coffee stop. We then head towards the smart town of Harrogate before branching left towards Darley, eventually ending up at the lunch stop near Blubberhouses (which was on the route of the 2014 Tour de France). A steady hill takes us up the moor before descending back into Ilkley.

Day4

Ride 3.
30-45 miles

Rhylstone - Hetton - Airton - Malham

A similar start to the ride as day 1, this undulating route veers off the Wharfe Valley through Hetton and Airton. The highlight is a visit to the breathtaking Malham Cove.

Rather than a set route we will plan your route accordingly to your requirements in respect of mileage and amount of climbing. Riders will usually complete 60-130km per day.

After some more climbing you descend onto the Vale of York for some relatively flat miles towards your overnight stay in the town of Thirsk, home of James Herriot!

Day4

Ride 3.
60-110 km

Thirsk to Helmsley

As you set off from Thirsk you’ll see the imposing sight of the North Yorkshire Moors ahead of you. There’s no easy way up onto the Moors, but there is a choice of climbs, all stunning. White Horse Bank or Boltby Bank will lead you upwards.

A clockwise loop then follows with as much climbing as you can take. The gradients are generally more severe than the Dales and come thick and fast. Gone are the dry stoned walls, replaced by baron moors of heather, which in bloom create a vast purple carpet across the landscape.

Your overnight stay will be in the Helmsley area and near the end of the day you cycle through Rosedale and the brave will tackle the legendary Rosedale Chimney climb with short section of 30% gradient.

Day5

Ride 4.
60-120 km

Helmsley to Ilkley

Today takes you back west towards your start point. Firstly enjoy a steady descent from the Moors through idyllic villages before hitting the Vale of York for some flat roads before the rolling hills start. You return to Ilkley via Ripon and then a choice of route featuring further classic climbs if you want them, including Hartwith Bank and Nought Bank road.

Arrive back in Ilkley late afternoon for departure, or add another night’s stay if you wish to relax in the town and celebrate your achievement!

"We visited practically every dale in the book - including Wharfedale, Swaledale, Dentdale, Coverdale & Wensleydale and cycled round the back of the Howgill Fells. A super weekend that will suit all Club cyclists"

Tamworth Cycling Club, July 2019

Outline

This tour allows you to experience the extended Yorkshire Dales Cycleway. The existing route was extended in 2016 and now takes in a stunning section along the side of the Howgill Fells and through the Westmorland Dales, before heading up to the highest pub in Britain at Tan Hill. The tour starts in Skipton (or Ilkley) and is a 250km clockwise circular tour of Yorkshire Dales.

The tour covers the route in 3 days, an average of 83km miles cycling each day, a feast of cycling for keen road cyclists.

You will experience challenging climbs, many included in the UK’s 100 Climbs book by Simon Warren, as well as iconic and breathtaking roads, many used in the Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire. The number of days can be varied if required, for example, a real challenge would be to ride the route in 2 days, or alternatively you may want to reduce the average km per day and complete it over 4 or 5 days.

We meet you at the start of the tour and ensure you have everything you need and then transport your luggage between overnight stops. Accommodation is in carefully chosen small hotels of character in small villages, with typical Yorkshire Dales facilities including good food options and pubs of real Yorkshire character.

Route description: You are now back on the original Cycleway and enjoy a classic ride today taking in 4 of Yorkshire’s finest valleys: Swaledale, Wensleydale, Coverdale and Wharefdale. Start the ride on a climb used in the 2014 Tour de France, the Cote de Grinton Moor which takes you over to Wensleydale. A slight detour will take you past the breathtaking Aysgarth Falls before heading over to Coverdale, a real ‘hidden gem’ of a valley. You wind your way up to the top of the ‘Cote de Park Rash’ as it was named in the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire and descend into the village of Kettlewell, famous for its annual scarecrow festival! It’s now a rolling valley ride back to the start down the Wharfe Valley through Grassington, Burnsall and Bolton Abbey, past the spectacular 12th century priory.

Arrive back at the start / depart, or maybe stay one more night to enjoy a celebratory dinner and drink in Skipton or Ilkley.

"Charles listened to what we wanted to do then tailored the route perfectly, giving us an excellent two days cycling in the Dales. He even managed to arrange sunny weather in November! Highly recommend Yorkshire Velo Tours"

Paul Tynan, November 2020

Outline

The majority of our clients ask us to either devise a tour to their specific requirements or vary one of our existing packages.

If you a want tour that features all the famous climbs, we can do this for you. By contrast we could also provide you with a tour that mainly stays in the valleys, although to get from one to another will always involve some climbing!

We can also include the picturesque villages in the Yorkshire Dales, for example a recent visitor from Alaska wanted to stop locations used in the TV series ‘All creatures great and small’!
